Important Message About Google’s Ranking Algorithm (and your website rankings)

If your website rankings at Google have tanked in the past 30 days don’t panic!
 
Today is July 17, 2023, and the word on the street is that Google has made some changes to their ranking algorithm, starting maybe two or three weeks ago, and the result is that some previously very well-ranked websites have lost a LOT OF GROUND.
 
Not all websites, but some websites have definitely taken a hit!
 
Having played the Google ranking game for more than 30 years, here’s what I think.

This happens from time to time and while it surely sets the stage for “panic mode” there really is no need to panic.
 
If your website WAS ranking well with Google, because of strong fundamental SEO strategy and tactics that are in place, your rankings will come back (99.9% chance).
 
Don’t Panic
 
If you panic and immediately make changes to your website and its content, you are making a BIG mistake and actually risk permanently losing your website’s ranking(s) with Google.
 
Remember: Muddy Rivers Always Settle Out
 
Think of this as mud being kicked up in an otherwise clear river. In time, it all settles down and the water is clear again. In my professional opinion, this is a perfect metaphor for what is happening right now.
 
What Should You Do?
 
Give it at least 30 days before you even THINK about making any changes to your SEO strategy and tactics.
 
Probably even a bit more – wait until Labor Day.
 
Again, I’m going to assume that you have in place a VERY good SEO strategy as well as the proper tactics that support it.

That Said…
 
That said, if you have made SIGNIFICANT changes to your website and its content you may have created this problem for yourself.
 
Have you recently launched a new, redesigned website?
 
Have you changed your website hosting?
 
Maybe your website has been infected with malware? That always kills rankings quickly!
 
Sometimes technical issues with your website hosting can cause this type of problem.
 
Your Google Search Console is a good place to check for issues that will impact your “Google Love.”
