Q: Chris, how can we get our website top-ranked for the Google “local” rankings that appear at the top of some Google search engine results pages (SERP)?

A: There are many variables involved in getting ranked in the Google local rankings (see screen image below).

Top on the list of things to do is to claim and optimize your Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business and before that Google Places).

You probably won’t get top-ranked in the local listings if your website isn’t also optimized for Google.

The formula that has worked for me is:

  1. Full search engine optimization of the company’s website
  2. Claim/configure the company’s Google Business profile
  3. Make sure there is a Google Sitemap in place at your website
  4. Register your Google Sitemap in the Google Search Console

I also believe Google Reviews have an impact on local listed rankings. With that in mind, put an extra effort into getting more Google Reviews.
